Launched at the end of July 2023, the  Vietnam Wild Bird contest  is organized to search for photos of rare, beautiful wild birds living in the territory of Vietnam.

A rare bird that few people can photograph

Surpassing many other wild bird photos, author Huynh Thanh Danh (HCMC) won first prize in the contest with the moment he captured the Black-backed Tree Climbing species (English name: Beautiful Nuthatch).

This bird species is at the vulnerable conservation level (VU). According to information from the organizers, since it was discovered by French ornithologists more than a hundred years ago, almost no one has seen this bird again.

Until recently, bird lovers discovered the presence of Black-backed Tree Climbing Tree in Vietnam, specifically in Mu Cang Chai and Nghe An.

According to ornithologist Nguyen Hoai Bao – a member of the jury, the Black-backed Tree Climbing species has a narrow distribution area, only appearing in high mountain areas. In the world, the number of photographers who have captured this bird is only about 100 people. That’s why Huynh Thanh Danh’s work won the award.

Besides the Black-backed Tree Climber, other rare birds in the red book have also been recorded by photographers such as Great Hornbill, Yellow-billed Nuthatch, and Temminck’s Tragopan. ), Woolly-necked Stork, Spoon-billed Sandpiper…

Sharing with  Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Huynh Thanh Danh said he completed his contest entry by chance while visiting Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai).

“It was May 2023, I originally planned to take photos in Fansipan but because of bad weather. Then we changed location to  Mu Cang Chai , I saw a very beautiful bird, and after taking a photo, my friend who was with me told me that it was a very rare Black-backed Tree Climbing species,” Mr. Danh shared.

Evaluating the quality of the contestants, photographer Nguyen Hong Nga – chairman of the jury board – felt very happy to have many quality works.

“Photographers from North to South have closely followed the migration season of birds into Vietnam. There are some very rare animals that are difficult to see, but the brothers were able to photograph them.

This is something that makes us very excited, it proves that Vietnamese photographers are very dedicated to  preserving nature , as well as precious birds and migratory birds to Vietnam,” Ms. Nga commented.

Besides the top 10 winning works, the organizers selected more than 50 other works to display. The exhibition will last until October 16, 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition to the award ceremony and opening of the exhibition, the event also announced the decision to establish the Vietnam Wildlife Photography Club.

Mr. Nguyen Hoai Bao said that the club was established with the desire to gather photographers who love nature, then together carry out propaganda work to protect birds and wild animals.

“Many people participating will create a trend, because this is also a new direction of photography, creating great motivation for the public to understand how beautiful nature is. Later, we will do activities such as organizing nature study sessions, publishing nature publications, creating competitions and exhibitions…”.
