The Central Truong Son Mountains – stretching from Ha Tinh to Da Nang – is one of the areas with exceptional ecological value, featuring a continuous forest system, high mountainous terrain, and home to many rare animal species such as the saola, large muntjac, Truong Son muntjac, and Truong Son striped rabbit… WWF’s new strategy not only aims to restore forests and conserve endangered species but also emphasizes the central role of local communities in solutions for harmonious development with nature. At the same time, the program is closely linked to national and international goals on climate, sustainable development, and environmental protection.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Quoc Tri highly appreciated the role of the Central Truong Son Mountains in maintaining natural forests and biodiversity in Vietnam, and suggested that Quang Tri province continue to cooperate effectively with international organizations to realize long-term strategic goals. Quang Tri was the first locality to sign a 5-year cooperation agreement with WWF in October 2023. After nearly two years, the parties have coordinated the implementation of many key programs, from saola conservation, forest livelihood support, agroforestry models to plastic waste management and water resource protection.
In particular, Quang Tri province has announced a technical program on “Natural-friendly solutions in forestry and environment,” and is promoting community participation in implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework and the National Biodiversity Strategy. These activities contribute to building a model ecological landscape where humans and nature coexist sustainably.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, Hoang Nam, emphasized that after merging with Quang Binh province, the locality has more opportunities and challenges in resource management and environmental conservation. “We are committed to continuing to expand cooperation with WWF, not only within the current framework but also towards a long-term strategic partnership, for a green, clean, and sustainable Quang Tri province,” he affirmed.
Mr. Thibault Ledecq, Director of Conservation at WWF-Vietnam, shared: “WWF hopes to work with partners to transform the Central Truong Son Mountains into a model landscape, where valuable biological values are preserved while creating sustainable livelihoods and increasing the resilience of communities to climate change.”
