ASEAN Leaders Commit to Working Together for a Green Planet

At the 36th ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) Meeting, held from 28–31 July in Malaysia, regional leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation to protect the environment, address climate change, and conserve biodiversity. The goal is to build a sustainable and resilient ASEAN Community. The joint statement emphasized collective responsibility in addressing transboundary environmental challenges while ensuring a balance between economic growth and the preservation of natural resources.

Within the framework of the meeting, ASEAN Member States agreed to accelerate the implementation of initiatives under the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community pillar, in which environment and climate are among the priority areas. Leaders acknowledged ASEAN’s coordinating role in promoting regional cooperation on greenhouse gas emission reduction, energy transition, marine plastic waste management, and the conservation of critical ecosystems.

Notably, ASEAN countries committed to strengthening the implementation of global biodiversity and climate targets, integrating conservation objectives into national development strategies. Protecting forests, restoring degraded ecosystems, and conserving endangered species were identified as key solutions to maintain ecosystem services and ensure livelihoods for millions of people across the region.

Leaders also emphasized the importance of cooperation in science and technology, the transfer of green technologies, and the mobilization of sustainable financial resources. Increasing the participation of the private sector, civil society organizations, and local communities is considered essential to realizing the goal of a “green planet,” especially in the context of limited public resources.

At the same time, ASEAN will continue to promote coordination mechanisms in managing transboundary air pollution, conserving migratory species, and managing shared water resources. An ecosystem-based approach and the principle of inclusive development will serve as the foundation for regional environmental policies in the coming period.

The commitment of ASEAN leaders reflects strong political determination to contribute to global efforts on climate action and biodiversity conservation. This message reaffirms Southeast Asia’s proactive role in joining hands to protect the planet for the benefit of present and future generations.
