Bach Ma National Park Recognized as an ASEAN Heritage Park

The 8th ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference (AHP8) was hosted by Vietnam in Ha Long (Quang Ninh) from December 2nd to 5th, co-organized by the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment – the focal point of the ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity of Vietnam – and the ASEAN Biodiversity Centre (ACB). At this event, Bach Ma National Park was honored to receive the ASEAN Heritage Park certification.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri presented the ASEAN Heritage Park certification to Bach Ma National Park at the AHP8 conference.

In 1984, recognizing the importance of nature and biodiversity to the development of both people and society, the ASEAN Environment Ministers’ Meeting marked the birth of the ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme through the declaration of the Environment Ministers on the ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme. The 8th ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference (AHP8) was held under the theme “ASEAN Heritage Parks: ASEAN’s Contribution to the Implementation of the Biodiversity Plan,” aiming to link regional efforts with global biodiversity goals.

The AHP8 conference included plenary sessions, parallel technical discussions, interactive exhibitions, and field trips to showcase best practices in protected area management and ecosystem restoration. Technical sessions focused on nature-based solutions to climate change, the link between health and biodiversity, the participation of indigenous peoples, local communities, youth, and women in conservation and ecosystem restoration, biodiversity goals, and sustainable financing for protected areas.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Quoc Tri affirmed that Southeast Asia is one of the world’s richest centers of biodiversity. Each heritage site honored today is not only beautiful in its landscape but also possesses exceptional ecological, cultural, and historical value. To date, Vietnam has 15 protected areas out of a total of 69 heritage sites recognized by ASEAN.

At the honoring ceremony, ACB and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment awarded ASEAN Heritage Park certificates to five areas in Vietnam, including: Xuan Thuy National Park (Ninh Binh), Pu Mat National Park (Nghe An), Bach Ma National Park (Hue City), Con Dao National Park (Ho Chi Minh City), and Dong Nai Nature and Culture Reserve.
