Accordingly, Con Dao National Park is the 101st protected area in the world to be recognized by the IUCN on the Green List. It is also the third protected area in Vietnam to receive this certification, after Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh) and Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai).

To achieve this certification, Con Dao National Parkhad to meet 17 criteria and 50 stringent indicators. The standards comprise four areas: good governance, good design and planning, effective management, and successful conservation results. To be inducted into this prestigious list, Con Dao National Park began its journey in 2020. The park completed its application in just three months, demonstrating outstanding governance capabilities even under challenging conditions.

Con Dao National Park boasts many characteristic tropical and marine ecosystems such as evergreen rainforests, semi-deciduous forests, mangrove forests, coral reefs, sandy tidal flats, and seagrass beds. Its terrestrial area includes 14 islands, home to a rich variety of seabirds such as the white-bellied tern, crested tern, and pink tern; the white-throated kingfisher; the grey-rumped swift; and the Con Dao long-tailed monkey, a rare endemic species.

Mr. Bui Minh Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that the city is committed to building Con Dao into a model of sustainable conservation and development. Con Dao will become a green, smart, and modern island. Technology will be widely applied to forest, marine, and tourism management. The locality aims to become an international-class ecological and resort center.

Participating in the Green List helps the park utilize effective control tools (METT). Management processes are synchronized according to global standards. The designation opens opportunities for international cooperation and attracts attention. The unit can access financial funding for conservation projects.
