According to the Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, in 2026, Dong Thap province plans to receive 8 more red-crowned cranes from Thailand to strengthen the population of this rare bird species at Tram Chim National Park. This is an important step in the Red-Crowned Crane Conservation Project for the period 2022-2032 that the locality is implementing.

According to the plan, among the added cranes, there will be 2 adult individuals, playing a reproductive role in restoring the population. The People’s Committee of Dong Thap province has instructed relevant agencies to urgently complete the legal and technical procedures, ready for the reception process. This activity also has special significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand.
Previously, in April 2025, Tram Chim National Park welcomed its first red-crowned cranes from Thailand. Partner organizations, including the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo and Zoological Park, continue to commit to supporting Vietnam in bringing in more individuals for conservation purposes.
Tram Chim National Park was once an ideal habitat for red-crowned cranes, with over 1,000 individuals recorded during the dry season. However, the crane population has declined sharply due to habitat changes. The addition of individuals from Thailand is expected to contribute to restoring the red-crowned crane population in Tram Chim, enhancing ecological value, conserving biodiversity, and developing ecotourism in the Dong Thap Muoi region.
