According to Nhan Dan Newspaper, on July 26th, the Management Board of the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area (under the Da Nang City Special Forest Management Board) confirmed the presence of an elephant baby in the forest area, through a camera trap system installed since the beginning of 2025.

Previously, the unit received a report from local residents participating in forest protection patrols in the Na Lau area about signs that the elephant herd might be reproducing. Immediately afterwards, a monitoring plan was implemented, with the installation of 30 camera traps at 15 locations along the routes the elephant herd usually travels. Although the first round of photo collection did not detect any new individuals, the authorities continued to persistently implement monitoring plans. During the review of data collected from July 20th to 23rd, images of a baby elephant, only a few months old, were unexpectedly captured. This individual moved nimbly, appeared healthy, and was always closely protected by its mother, demonstrating the stability of the wild elephant population in the area.
Representatives from the conservation area stated that this discovery is a positive sign showing that conservation efforts are proving effective, from maintaining natural habitats and limiting human-elephant conflicts to ensuring the sustainable development of the population. In 2020, the area also recorded the appearance of a baby elephant, approximately one year old, thanks to support from the Truong Son Green Project. In addition to monitoring, the unit also implemented community support solutions such as planting a 7km-long biological barrier using soapberry to prevent elephant intrusion, while also creating an income source from soapberry fruit for people in the buffer zone.
The Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area was established in 2017 and, from July 1, 2025, will be under the administrative boundaries of the expanded Da Nang City. It currently possesses a system of key conservation areas such as Son Tra, Ba Na – Nui Chua, Cu Lao Cham, and the Elephant Conservation Area itself, playing a strategic role in conserving biodiversity in the Eastern Truong Son region and developing sustainable forests in the context of increasingly complex climate change.
According to the leaders of the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area, the discovery of additional baby elephants has increased the number of elephants in the area to nine. The wild elephant population here has a complete herd structure including males, females, and young elephants.
