Through camera trapping, many endangered wildlife species, such as the Himalayan black bear, the red-backed pheasant, and the golden-footed muntjac, have been recorded in the Pu Hu Nature Reserve. Notably, many rare species are seen in herds.
These concrete images provide the most authentic evidence that the Pu Hu Nature Reserve (spanning the districts of Quan Hoa and Muong Lat in northwestern Thanh Hoa province) is home to many rare animal species, unlike previous records which were only based on footprints. This confirms the biodiversity of the area.

Particularly noteworthy is the first-ever sighting of three Himalayan black bears together. The Himalayan black bear, scientifically known as Ursus thibetanus or Ursus tibetanus, is also known as the Tibetan black bear, Himalayan black bear, or Asian black bear. This is a large animal, weighing 80-180 kg. The sun bear has a bulky, stout body, a broad forehead, and round ears; its front and hind legs have five toes; its claws are strong, sharp, and curved; it walks on its paws; its hind feet are long with heels that closely resemble human footprints. Its fur is long, coarse, and jet black, with long fur on either side of its neck forming a mane.
Mr. Do Ngoc Duong, Director of the Pu Hu Nature Reserve, said: “Currently, we are continuing to investigate the status and distribution of the animal population. At the same time, we are determining the ecological location, food composition and habitat, population structure, and factors threatening the habitat, the risk of population and individual decline. Along with that, we are stepping up efforts to raise public awareness about the conservation of rare and endangered wild animals.”
With an area of over 24,200 hectares of natural forest, the Pu Hu Nature Reserve, located in Quan Hoa and Muong Lat districts (Thanh Hoa province), boasts a diverse ecosystem, habitat, and species of flora and fauna. Surveys and records show that the Pu Hu Nature Reserve contains 1,725 plant species belonging to 696 genera, 170 families, 71 orders, 12 classes, and 6 divisions. The majority of higher plant species are concentrated in the strictly protected areas of the reserve. The flora of Pu Hu includes a total of 52 species listed in the 2007 Vietnam Red Book. According to IUCN standards, the flora of Pu Hu includes 93 recorded species, 16 of which are listed in Decree 06/2019/ND-CP. The fauna is not only rich in species but also concentrated in high densities. The survey results recorded a total of 915 animal species, including more than 30 rare species listed in the Red Book of Vietnam and the world.
