The project will contribute to raising awareness among the community and stakeholders, contributing to the improvement of policies for managing, protecting, and ending the illegal trade and consumption of wild animals, and supporting the implementation of the National Strategy on Biodiversity Conservation to 2030, with a vision to 2050.

Previously, the People’s Committee of Hue City issued a decision on the establishment of the Saola Nature Reserve. The establishment of the Saola Nature Reserve aims to protect the natural forest area in the Central Truong Son region with the function of protecting the headwaters of the Huong and Bo rivers. The project aims to restore and preserve the ecosystems and other rare animal and plant species, especially the Saola population and the two hoofed mammal species, the Greater Muntjac and the Trường Sơn Muntjac.

According to the plan, by the end of June 2025, the project will focus on enhancing the capacity and participation of social organizations and local communities to effectively implement policies on wildlife protection, while simultaneously halting illegal wildlife trade and consumption. By the end of September 2025, the message about the importance and role of Vietnam in biodiversity conservation and wildlife protection will be widely disseminated through communication and awareness activities within local communities.

The saola (scientific name: Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) is one of the rarest mammals in the world, inhabiting the Truong Son mountain range in Vietnam and Laos. It was discovered by scientists in 1992. Saolas are also found in other areas within the Truong Son forest range in the provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Hue city, Quang Nam, and many provinces in Laos.
