Phu My Species-Habitat Conservation Area was established by the People’s Committee of Kien Giang province with Decision 454/QD-UBND on March 1, 2016. With a total area of ​​over 2,700 hectares; Core area of ​​over 940 hectares; Buffer area of ​​1,760 hectares. Located in Phu My commune, Giang Thanh district, Kien Giang province, 7km southwest of the Cambodian border, the majority of the people are Khmer ethnic people, mainly living on agriculture, aquaculture, and small-scale handicrafts such as small-scale weaving of sedge grass…

With a flora and fauna of more than 472 species, including; 134 phytoplankton taxa, 69 zooplankton species, 7 benthic animals, 39 spider species, 65 aquatic insect species; 23 fish species; 23 reptile amphibians and more than 132 bird species; especially the crane species, every year there are 100 red-crowned cranes coming here to live and find food, the largest flying bird species currently remaining in the world, at risk of extinction, listed in the Red Book of Vietnam and the world.

Objectives of Phu My Conservation Area – Species Habitat: Conserve biodiversity, with priority given to preserving the only remaining sedge grassland ecosystem in the Mekong Delta and maintaining the number of Red-crowned Cranes of over 100 individuals returning here to roost each year; Manage exploitation reasonably, without exhausting the grassland ecosystem, thereby ensuring the sustainable development of traditional craft villages and stable livelihoods for the people. Serve scientific research, develop eco-tourism combined with visiting craft villages and watching Red-crowned Cranes; Deploy and implement plans for education, propaganda and dissemination of laws on biodiversity conservation, especially in the Conservation Area.
