Cu Lao Cham – Hoi An Biosphere Reserve was recognized on May 26, 2009 with a total area: 33,146 hectares; Population: 83,792 people.

This biosphere vividly demonstrates the harmonious combination of culture and nature through the connection between the cultural heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town and Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area as a model for sustainable development. under the coordination of Hoi An City People’s Committee to effectively carry out the functions of a world biosphere, while contributing to the implementation of the local Sustainable Development Strategy (Agenda 21).

Cu Lao Cham consists of 8 islands. The island and the sea areas around the island have high biodiversity with 947 aquatic species. In the high mountains of the island there are tropical rain forest ecosystems, many species are recorded in the red book. Residents on the island live mainly from fishing, collecting medicinal plants, tourism services… especially exploiting bird’s nests. This is a food with high nutritional value and is also a medicinal herb that can cure many serious diseases. It can be said: “Protecting nature well will bring good living conditions for swiftlets and the livelihoods of local people will also be sustainable.” The cultural heritage of Hoi An ancient town is almost intact with streets reflecting on the banks of Thu Bon River. The architecture of the houses is made of precious wood, the interior is decorated with diaphragms, couplets, and carved pillars all bearing Japanese and Chinese culture during trade exchanges hundreds of years ago, along with Intangible values ​​such as festivals, customs, and folk customs are still very well preserved as a living museum of architecture and urban lifestyle. The effectiveness of the connection between cultural heritage and marine conservation is to develop all types of tourism and improve people’s living standards.
