Tay Nghe An Biosphere Reserve was recognized on September 18, 2007 with a total area of 1,299,795 hectares and divided into 03 functional zones.
– Core area: Area 168,301ha, population 1,953 people, including: Pu Mat National Park and 2 Nature Reserves Pu Huong and Pu Hoat in 5 districts: Con Cuong, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, and Tuong Duong.
– Buffer zone: Area 608,547ha, population 314,709 people, belonging to 8 districts: Anh Son, Con Cuong, Ky Son, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Thanh Chuong, and Tuong Duong.
– Transition area: Area of about 522,947 hectares, population of 611,367 people, within the administrative boundaries of 8 districts: Anh Son, Con Cuong, Ky Son, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, and Tuong Duong.
Tay Nghe An Biosphere Reserve has more than 120 km of border and two border gates: Nam Can border gate (Ky Son district) and Thanh Thuy border gate (Thanh Chuong district) communicating with the Lao People’s Democratic Republic; National Highway 7, National Highway 48 and the transportation system are very convenient for socio-economic development in the region.
Tay Nghe An Biosphere Reserve has very high biodiversity representing most forest types of tropical rainforests, with very diverse habitats including: mountains, wetlands, streams and other habitats. This is the only area of the North that still has a large area of well-protected primary forest, especially the area along the Vietnam-Laos border. In the area, 1,297 plant species have been investigated and recorded. According to the most recent report, this area has about 2,500 species, including about 2,000 species of higher plants (74%); There are 130 species of large and small animals recorded, including some particularly rare species such as saola, tiger, Truong Son striped rabbit…; 295 bird species; 54 species of amphibians and reptiles; 83 species of fish and 39 species of bats.
This is also the place with the greatest ethnic cultural diversity among Vietnam’s biosphere reserves with 9 ethnic groups. In particular, there are two ethnic groups that are unique to Nghe An and are in a state of serious degradation and loss of cultural identity: the Dan Lai ethnic group (about 3,000 people left in Con Cuong district) and the Dan Lai ethnic group (about 3,000 people left in Con Cuong district).
