On September 6, 2019, the People’s Committee of Thai Binh province approved Decision No. 2514/QD-UBND on the establishment of Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve. Accordingly, Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve is located outside dyke 8 of Thai Thuy district, bordering 03 communes and 01 town including: Thuy Truong, Thuy Xuan, Thuy Hai and Diem Dien town. The north borders Thai Binh river with the boundary from the heart of the river, the south borders Diem Ho river with the boundary from the heart of the river 400m out for the channel protection corridor, the west borders sea dyke No. 8 to the sea, the east borders the East Sea. The Reserve does not include Dai Duong Shipyard, Tan Son Fishing Port, Diem Ho River Estuary Channel, Hai Ha Anchorage Area and 02 industrial parks (Thuy Truong, Xuan Hai) that have been considered for planning by the province.
The total area of the Conservation Area is: 6,560 ha, including: (i) Strictly protected area: 1,500 ha; (ii) Ecological restoration area: 4,800 ha; (iii) Service and administrative area: 260 ha.
Previous investigation and research results in the coastal wetlands of Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province have shown that this area has about 1,000 animal species living in mangrove ecosystems, tidal flats and coastal estuarine waters. Of which, the area of natural mangrove forests over 50 years old with the dominant species of Sonneratia species is mainly in Thuy Truong commune.
Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve was established to conserve biodiversity values in the coastal wetlands of Thai Thuy, Thai Binh province, especially to conserve globally threatened wintering migratory birds, contributing to economic – cultural – social development and encouraging community participation in the management, exploitation and wise use of wetland ecosystem services in the area, ensuring connectivity with associated habitats.
