On March 25, 1999, the People’s Committee of Dak Lak province approved the investment project according to Decision No. 598/QD-UB, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also appraised this project (Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2000).
Ea So Nature Reserve (BTTN) has an area of 26,848 hectares spread across Ea Kar district, Dak Lak province, bordering Gia Lai and Phu Yen provinces. It was established with the aim of preserving intact the unique natural habitat of the forest ecosystem located in the transitional area between the Central Highlands and the South Central Coast in the ecological region ranked as a priority for conservation.
Ea So Nature Reserve is considered a precious “gem” in the ecosystem of evergreen tropical forests interspersed with large and year-round humid grasslands, rare in Vietnam and the whole Southeast Asia region. This typical ecosystem is an ideal condition for ungulates to survive and develop, especially wild buffalo and gray-haired gaur, which are rare in the world today. In addition, due to the terrain of the Ea So forest being strongly fragmented during the geological formation process of millions of years, countless waterfalls, rapids, and dangerous cliffs have been formed, creating a majestic and wild natural picture rarely seen on the Dak Lak plateau. In particular, Bay Waterfall, located in the core area of the reserve, is one of the most beautiful and impressive waterfalls with a height of nearly 30 m, a width of nearly 200 m, and a length of nearly 1,000 m, from the top of the waterfall to the foot of the waterfall.
