Muong La Nature Reserve was established under Decision 511/QD-UBND, dated March 7, 2016 of Son La Provincial People’s Committee. The total planned area of ​​the Reserve is over 15,800 hectares, located in 3 communes: Hua Trai, Ngoc Chien and Nam Pam. Divided by functional areas, it includes 3 sub-areas: Strictly protected area of ​​over 8,000 hectares, ecological restoration area of ​​3,339 hectares, administrative service area of ​​over 31 hectares.

According to the investigation results of the Management Board of Muong La Nature Reserve, the area has a natural forest ecosystem of high and medium mountains, typical of the Northwest region, with a forest flora of 622 species belonging to 130 families of 5 higher plant branches, including 27 rare species listed in the IUCN Red List 2010 and the Vietnam Red Book 2007 such as po mu, du sam, red pine, golden orchid…; The fauna is also very diverse, with 323 species belonging to 97 families, 28 orders of 4 classes of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, with 51 rare species, some species have high conservation value such as the black gibbon, the red-necked hornbill, the brown hornbill… In addition, some rare species have only been identified through documents and information from local people such as the fire leopard, fire wolf, clouded leopard… As for the black gibbon, there are currently only about 20 – 30 individuals left, mainly distributed in the areas of Hua Khoa, Hua Sang, Huoi Lat, Ta Xua.
