Ta Kou Nature Reserve (KBTTN) was established in 1996, about 20 km from Phan Thiet and about 1800 km from Hanoi. According to FIPI (1996), Ta Kou KBTTN is located at coordinates 10 o 41’28” – 10 o 53’01” North latitude and 107 o 52’14” – 108 o 01’34” East longitude. The strictly protected area (core zone) includes Ta Kou mountain, 697 m high and 1,104 ha wide, and a coastal area of 10,762 ha consisting mainly of coastal sandy soil.

Ta Kou Nature Reserve is considered one of 221 important ecological regions in the world that need urgent conservation. Ta Kou Nature Reserve has an area of about 11,886 hectares, of which more than 10,000 hectares are lowland forests and Ta Kou mountain covers an area of about 1,000 hectares. However, researchers have recorded 3 different forest types distributed according to altitude. The type of broadleaf forest on low mountains is distributed at an altitude of over 500m above sea level; the type of semi-deciduous broadleaf forest on low mountains is distributed from an altitude of over 300m to 500m; and the type of deciduous broadleaf forest in the dry season on low terrain and low mountains is distributed from the foot of the mountain up to an altitude of about 300m. Along with the diverse forest ecosystem is a fairly rich and diverse fauna, some species of which are listed in the Vietnam Red Book. Scientists have recorded 5 species of primates such as: Little loris, long-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, red-faced macaque and silvered langur, black-shanked douc… The fauna in Ta Kou forest is divided into 3 regions: Ta Kou and Ta Dang mountainous areas have high, steep mountains, closed forests, and many fruits. This area is home to many species of animals such as pig-tailed macaque, gray langur, civet, weasel, squirrel, bird, peacock… Low hills and sparse forests have herbivores such as deer, cheo, rabbit, jungle fowl. Marshes and swamps have many species of freshwater fish, reptiles such as snakes, golden turtles, soft-shelled turtles… In addition to its natural values, Ta Kou Nature Reserve is considered to have great potential for ecotourism. This place is famous for Bung Thi hot spring, Ta Kou mountain tourist area…
