Xuan Lien Nature Reserve was established in 2000, with a total area of 23,815.5 hectares. The flora and fauna of the Reserve are very rich and diverse, with many species listed in the Vietnam and World Red Books; valuable for science and ecotourism.
Xuan Lien Nature Reserve is located in the administrative boundary of Thuong Xuan district, 65 km southwest of Thanh Hoa city with geographical coordinates: 19 o 052′ – 20 o 002′ North latitude; 104 o 058′ – 105 o 015′ East longitude.
Xuan Lien Nature Reserve is famous for its rich and diverse flora and fauna, with tropical moist evergreen closed forests typical of Northern Vietnam. Professional researchers assess Xuan Lien Nature Reserve as a primeval forest with many precious trees thousands of years old, which are listed in the Vietnam Heritage Trees dossier and are being strictly protected and have rare genetic resources preserved. In addition to the thousand-year-old trees listed in the Red Book, Xuan Lien primeval forest also has many brilliant orchid species and hundreds of other precious medicinal plants.
The flora of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve has identified 1,142 species, 620 genera and 180 families. Of which, the magnolia phylum is the most diverse, accounting for 87.3% of the total species in the research area. In the research results of the flora of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, 3 new species have been identified for the flora of Vietnam.

Xuan Lien Nature Reserve records 80 species of mammals belonging to 26 families and 9 orders. In addition, research, synthesis and statistical results show that Xuan Lien Nature Reserve has 192 species of birds belonging to 41 families and 15 orders. There are 41 species of reptiles belonging to 11 families and 2 orders. Notably, 12 species are newly recorded for the Nature Reserve and Thanh Hoa province… Regarding amphibians, research, synthesis and statistical results in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve have 36 species belonging to 7 families and 2 orders. Of which, 9 species are newly recorded for Thanh Hoa province…
In addition to the value of forest resources, water resources here are also a valuable type of tourism resource, with great tourist attraction. Typically, Cua Dat Lake has a water surface area of 2,828.6 hectares, associated with the Cua Dat Irrigation – Hydroelectric Project and is one of the largest lakes in Vietnam. At the same time, there are many river mouths and streams flowing into the lake with many beautiful natural waterfalls.
This water tourism resource is an endless potential for recreational and relaxing activities and has great tourist attraction. In the area, there are many beautiful waterfalls, which are valuable natural landscapes that have not been exploited such as: 7-storey waterfall, Tien waterfall, Tat Mu-Tat Mu waterfall… Among these waterfalls, there are waterfalls up to 200m high, divided into many levels creating very interesting natural images.
Besides nature is the human factor. Since ancient times, the ethnic minorities living around the reserve, mainly Muong and Thai people, have preserved many unique and beautiful customs, lifestyles, and traditional activities… All the valuable natural and human resources will be the basis for the development of ecotourism and community ecological activities.
