Launching Ceremony of the “Tree Planting Festival in Eternal Gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh” – Spring At Ty 2025 and in Response to World Wetlands Day 2025

On the morning of 4 February (the 7th day of the Lunar New Year of At Ty), at the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) in coordination with the People’s Committee of Thai Binh Province organized the Launching Ceremony of the “Tree Planting Festival in Eternal Gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh – Spring At Ty 2025” and in response to World Wetlands Day 2025.

The event was co-organized by MONRE and the Thai Binh Provincial People’s Committee at the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve. Member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Do Duc Duy presided over the ceremony.

Attending the ceremony from MONRE were Do Duc Duy, Member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, along with heads of relevant units under the Ministry. Representing Thai Binh Province were Nguyen Khac Than, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, leaders of the Provincial Party Committee, the People’s Council, the People’s Committee, the Fatherland Front Committee, leaders of provincial departments and agencies, and leaders and residents of Thai Thuy District.

The ceremony was also attended by Ramla Khalidi, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam, as well as representatives of several international organizations in Viet Nam. Nguyen Van Tai, Director General of the Nature Conservation and Biodiversity Agency, also attended the event.

In his opening remarks, Minister Do Duc Duy emphasized that planting trees, protecting forests, and developing forest resources are becoming increasingly important in the current context, as environmental pollution and global climate change are exerting profound impacts on socio-economic development as well as people’s quality of life.

The development of green trees plays a significant role in nature conservation, biodiversity protection, and environmental improvement, while also promoting the country’s sustainable development. It also contributes to disaster risk reduction, greenhouse gas emission mitigation, and more effective responses to climate change.

This year, MONRE and Thai Binh Province selected the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve, an important site for the conservation of biodiversity values in coastal wetland ecosystems, to host the launching ceremony of the “Tree Planting Festival in Eternal Gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh – Spring At Ty 2025” and to celebrate World Wetlands Day 2025.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and supporting partners donated 10,000 trees to the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve and residents of Thai Thuy District. These include trang trees and ban trees, which are native species well adapted to the natural conditions, soil, and climate of the Thai Thuy wetlands.

At the ceremony, 300 trang trees and 1,000 ban trees were planted. The remaining 9,000 trees will be planted in the following days depending on weather and tidal conditions, ensuring completion before 30 March 2025.

This initiative aims to develop forests through multi-purpose tree planting, including biodiversity conservation, protection of wetland ecosystems, disaster prevention, mitigation of saltwater intrusion, climate change adaptation, protection of sea dikes, wave buffering, and the creation of sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

The launching ceremony of the Tree Planting Festival in Eternal Gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh – Spring At Ty 2025 also serves as an opportunity for communities to respond to World Wetlands Day 2025, themed “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.”

The theme highlights the importance of collective action to safeguard wetland ecosystems and to ensure that all people can continue benefiting from the life-supporting services that wetlands provide.

To ensure that the Tree Planting Festival brings meaningful and practical benefits to both the nation and communities, Minister Do Duc Duy called upon ministries, sectors, local authorities, enterprises, international organizations in Viet Nam, and every household and individual to join hands in implementing the following actions:

First, strengthen tree planting activities nationwide. At the same time, promote awareness among communities so that tree planting is not only conducted during the Lunar New Year but throughout the spring and year-round whenever weather conditions permit. Widely promote the message that tree planting is an activity that “requires little cost but brings great benefits,” as taught by President Ho Chi Minh, thereby contributing significantly to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration.

Second, promote nature-based and community-based solutions. All organizations and individuals in society should work together to prevent illegal deforestation. Strengthen communication and provide people with knowledge and skills on forest protection and development. In particular, protecting mangrove forests and conserving biodiversity are crucial, as they help maintain ecosystems, protect sea dikes, buffer waves, limit saltwater intrusion, mitigate climate change impacts, and create sustainable livelihoods for local communities. In addition, recognizing and rewarding exemplary individuals, models, and effective approaches is essential to spread positive practices and encourage collective action across society.

Third, effectively implement the National Action Plan on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wetlands for the period 2021–2030, and integrate wetland protection, management, restoration, and sustainable use into socio-economic development programs, plans, and projects of ministries, sectors, and localities.

These efforts will contribute to the effective implementation of the National Biodiversity Conservation Planning for the period 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 1352/QD-TTg dated 08 November 2024.
