International Day of Biodiversity May 22: Towards “Living in harmony with nature”

The 2023 International Day of Biodiversity was launched by the United Nations with the theme “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity”. The theme is to call on governments to quickly turn commitments into action to prevent and reverse biodiversity loss, aiming to build a future of “Living in harmony with nature” by 2050. .

These commitments were made in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted by the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) in December 2022. . GBF sets many important goals to urgently reverse the rapid decline in biodiversity that has occurred globally over the past decades.

In response to the International Day of Biodiversity 2023, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment sent official dispatches to ministries, departments, and central organizations; People’s Committees of provinces and cities on organizing activities to respond to the International Day of Biodiversity 2023.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment requests agencies, units and localities to strengthen communication, education and raise awareness about biodiversity and its role in sustainable development; change behavior and promote lifestyles in harmony with nature; Do not hunt and use products derived from rare wild animals; Fair and reasonable sharing of benefits obtained from nature; poverty reduction and improving sustainable livelihoods for the community.

Based on the actual situation, agencies, units and localities organize the development and implementation of Action Plans on biodiversity to implement the National Strategy on Biodiversity until 2030, Vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 149/QD-TTg dated January 28, 2022; ensuring compliance with the framework and goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also recommends researching and applying nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based approaches to protect, conserve, manage and sustainably use ecosystems to solve problems. on climate change, contributing to the benefits of biodiversity and human welfare; Strengthen investigation, inventory, and monitoring of biodiversity, creating background information on the current status of biodiversity as a basis for the decision-making process on nature and biodiversity conservation; Strictly control the impact of development projects on natural areas and biodiversity.

Agencies and units continue to strengthen activities to conserve wild and migratory birds in Vietnam to implement Directive No. 04/CT-TTg dated May 17, 2022 of the Prime Minister; At the same time, promote the implementation of programs and plans to restore degraded natural ecosystems such as mangrove forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds and other important wetlands in order to effectively implement them. results of the United Nations Decade for Restoration of Natural Ecosystems.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment believes that it is necessary to continue to consolidate and strengthen the natural heritage system through synchronous implementation of new regulations of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 and Decree 08/2022/ND-CP dated January 10. /2022 of the Government, which prioritizes strengthening capacity and resources for environmental management and protection of natural heritage, and guides the establishment and recognition of natural heritage.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also requests agencies, units and localities to promote the application of science and technology and international cooperation to strengthen capacity and infrastructure in accessing and connecting with ministries, branches and localities. while ensuring fairness, comprehensiveness, effectiveness and responsibility of the community in participating and making decisions related to biodiversity associated with indigenous culture in each locality.

In the near future, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will organize a workshop “Coordinated actions to implement the Kunming – Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework”, to share about Vietnam’s efforts as well as call for proposals and initiatives. promote conservation and implementation of the Framework. The celebration of the International Day of Biodiversity organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Bac Kan province will take place at Ba Be National Park.
