The reserve is named after the highest mountain – Pu Mat mountain. Due to its immense biodiversity value, the reserve was upgraded to Pu Mat National Park by Decision No. 174/2001/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on November 8, 2001. Accordingly, the main functions of the park include: Protection and development of special-use forests; Conservation and promotion of biodiversity values and genetic resources; Conservation of nature, cultural, historical, and landscape values; Scientific research, international cooperation, rescue and development of wildlife; Environmental education and provision of forest environmental services; and Ecotourism development.

Pù Mát is also a pioneer in applying information technology, introducing smart devices to support forest rangers in performing their professional duties, especially in “protecting forests at the grassroots level.” Every year, more than 1,800 households participate in forest protection contracts; this has contributed to creating jobs and significant income for the people and limiting their impact on the forest.

In 2025, Pù Mát National Park will be honored to be recognized as an ASEAN Heritage Park.
