Recognition of a Vietnamese Heritage Tree in Quang Nam

On February 21, 2025, the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province held a ceremony to announce the decision recognizing the Vietnamese Heritage Tree (the Rỏi Mật tree) located in the Ky Anh Tunnel historical site. The tree has a trunk circumference of 2.7 meters, is over 26 meters tall, and is over 500 years old, located in Thach Tan village, Tam Thang commune, Tam Ky city.

Attending the ceremony were Professor Dr. Dang Huy Huynh – Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Nature and Environment; Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Phan Thai Binh; Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department Huynh Thi Thuy Dung; and Mr. Le Van Huu, Deputy Director of the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment).

The Rỏi Mật tree not only holds historical value but also plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance, contributing to a green landscape, and raising community awareness about nature conservation. According to local people, the Rỏi Mật tree has a long history of association with the people. During the resistance against the French, it was a site for the “eradicate illiteracy” campaign. During the resistance against the Americans, guerrillas often climbed it to observe enemy movements, signaling their troops to escape through the streams and then hide in the tunnels. The Rỏi Mật tree, towering amidst the swamps and low-lying forest, endured many enemy bombs and artillery shells, yet it remained standing.

According to Mr. Tran Trung Hau, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Tam Ky City, the recognition of the Rỏi Mật tree as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree is not only a source of pride for the people of Tam Ky City but also a testament to the efforts in protecting nature, preserving ecological values, and cultural heritage in Quang Nam province in general.

Currently, the Rỏi Mật tree, along with the Ky Anh Tunnels, has become an attractive tourist destination, helping visitors understand more about a difficult but glorious period in the nation’s history.
