On the occasion of International Forest Day, March 21, 2025, Cuc Phuong National Park released 10 rare white pheasants (a species belonging to Group IB, according to Government Decree 84/2021/ND-CP) back into the wild. This event was attended by a group of tourists from Hanoi.
The group of tourists from Hanoi, along with forest rangers, released 5 pairs of rare white pheasants back into Cuc Phuong National Park (Photo: Cuc Phuong National Park).
These white pheasants had previously been rescued, cared for, and bred at the Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Development Center of Cuc Phuong National Park. After a period of nurturing, they were healthy enough and ready to reintegrate into the natural environment, contributing to the restoration of this species’ population in the wild.
The White Pheasant (scientific name: Lophura nycthemera) is a species of pheasant. It is distinguished by its characteristic pure white plumage. The male has pure white plumage, accented with V-shaped black stripes on the upper body and tail, while the crest and belly are dark blue. The face and legs of the male are bright red. The female has brown or gray feathers with black stripes and is smaller than the male. This species typically lives in dense forests with abundant vegetation. They primarily forage on the ground, feeding on seeds, fruits, insects, and small animals.
The reintroduction of rescued wild animals into the wild carries profound humanitarian significance, while also raising awareness about environmental protection and fostering love and responsibility towards wildlife within the community.
The International Day of Forests (IDF) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 and first celebrated on March 21, 2013. This event aims to honor the crucial role of forests in environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. The theme for 2025 will emphasize the link between forests and food security. Forests are not only the green lungs of the earth but also a vital source of food, especially for ethnic minority communities and those who depend on them for their livelihoods.
