Viet Nam Effectively Implements the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Amid the unprecedented decline of global biodiversity, the international community achieved a significant milestone with the adoption of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at the Fifteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15). This framework serves as a global roadmap for the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity by 2030, with a long-term vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050.

As one of the countries recognized for its rich biodiversity, Viet Nam has been actively implementing a wide range of measures to effectively achieve the goals and targets set out in the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. These efforts contribute to the global movement to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

Strong commitment to biodiversity conservation

Viet Nam is widely known as a biodiversity-rich country, home to diverse ecosystems including tropical forests, wetlands, and marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as numerous rare and endangered species. However, rapid socio-economic development, urbanization, natural resource exploitation, and climate change have placed increasing pressure on these natural ecosystems.

Recognizing the importance of biodiversity conservation for sustainable development, the Government of Viet Nam has demonstrated strong commitment to implementing the objectives of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Biodiversity conservation targets are increasingly being integrated into national development strategies and planning processes. At the same time, the country continues to strengthen its legal and policy frameworks to enhance the management and protection of natural resources.

In addition, Viet Nam is updating its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan in alignment with the new global biodiversity targets, particularly those to be achieved by 2030 under the Kunming–Montreal Framework.

Expanding and strengthening protected areas

One of the key targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework is to ensure that at least 30 percent of the world’s land and sea areas are conserved by 2030. In response to this goal, Viet Nam is making significant efforts to strengthen and expand its system of protected areas, national parks, and marine protected areas.

Currently, Viet Nam has established a network of protected areas that includes national parks, nature reserves, species and habitat conservation areas, and landscape protection areas. These protected areas play a vital role in safeguarding important ecosystems, conserving endangered species, and maintaining essential ecosystem services that support human well-being.

Alongside expanding protected area coverage, Viet Nam is also focusing on improving the effectiveness of protected area management. Efforts include strengthening the capacity of forest rangers, applying modern technologies in forest monitoring, and promoting the active participation of local communities in conservation activities.

Ecosystem restoration and sustainable use of natural resources

The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework not only emphasizes the protection of nature but also highlights the importance of restoring degraded ecosystems. In recent years, Viet Nam has implemented various programs to restore forests, rehabilitate mangrove ecosystems, improve wetland ecosystems, and protect coral reefs in coastal areas.

These initiatives contribute not only to biodiversity conservation but also to enhancing ecosystem resilience to climate change while supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

At the same time, Viet Nam has been promoting development models that integrate economic growth with environmental protection. Ecotourism, sustainable agriculture, and community-based forest management are examples of approaches that help balance economic development with biodiversity conservation.

Strengthening international cooperation

The implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework requires close collaboration among countries, international organizations, and various stakeholders. Viet Nam has actively participated in numerous international initiatives and partnerships related to nature conservation and biodiversity protection.

Through cooperation with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and research institutions, Viet Nam has gained access to important resources such as financial support, advanced technologies, and scientific knowledge to support conservation efforts.

Furthermore, Viet Nam continues to share experiences and lessons learned with countries in the region and around the world, thereby contributing to stronger regional and global cooperation in biodiversity conservation.

Toward the vision of living in harmony with nature

Effective implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework requires the participation of not only government agencies but also businesses, civil society organizations, and individual citizens.

In the coming years, Viet Nam will continue to strengthen policy frameworks, increase investment in biodiversity conservation, promote scientific research, and raise public awareness of the value of biodiversity.

With coordinated efforts and the active participation of multiple stakeholders, Viet Nam is steadily advancing toward achieving the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework. These efforts contribute to safeguarding valuable natural resources for present and future generations while supporting the global vision of a planet where humanity lives in harmony with nature.
