The bilateral partnership between Vietnam and the Republic of Finland has been strengthened through the signing of an important Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), covering environmental issues, biodiversity, and climate change response. This event took place solemnly at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki on the afternoon of October 21st (local time), witnessed by General Secretary To Lam and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

The cooperation document, signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam and the Ministry of Environment of Finland, establishes a formal framework to promote mutual understanding and the sharing of best practices. The core objective of this collaboration is to enhance knowledge and capacity for action towards achieving sustainable development goals for both countries. Both sides are committed to conducting extensive exchanges of expertise and experience in environmental protection, biodiversity conservation strategies, and solutions to the global climate crisis.
The Memorandum of Understanding emphasizes encouraging deep connections, not limited to ministerial levels, but also between research institutes, universities, and the private sector. The goal is to create momentum for the implementation of joint research and development programs and projects, especially in pioneering fields.
Key areas of cooperation between the two countries include: Environmental protection and pollution control, particularly air, water, and plastic pollution;
Nature conservation and biodiversity;
Circular economy, including environmental standards, technologies, and expertise, as well as extended producer responsibility (EPR);
Carbon pricing, carbon markets, and carbon trading;
Climate science and technology;
Surface and groundwater resource management, including controlled aquifer recharging;
And other areas of cooperation agreed upon by both sides.
The signing of the MOU is considered a significant step forward, opening up opportunities for practical and in-depth cooperation, directly contributing to the sustainable development goals that both Vietnam and Finland are pursuing.
