Cat Ba National Park (PNP) was established under Decision No. 79-CT, dated March 31, 1986 of the Council of Ministers (now the Prime Minister), with a total natural area of ​​15,200 hectares. On April 6, 2004, Cat Ba National Park was transferred to Hai Phong City People’s Committee for management under Decision 333/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister. In 2004, Cat Ba archipelago was recognized by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve.

Cat Ba National Park is about 45km southeast of Hai Phong city and 25km south of Ha Long city. Cat Ba National Park is located on the largest island of the Cat Ba archipelago, which is stretched to form a bow shape. The islands have a common height of 100 – 150m above sea level, the highest point is Cao Vong peak at 331m. The small islands have all the terrain types of a flooded Karst region. The climate of Cat Ba is tropical monsoon. Cat Ba usually has a hot, humid summer with lots of rain (from May to October) and a cold, low-rain winter (from November to April of the following year. The average temperature on the island is 25-280C. As a coastal island, the Cat Ba area is also strongly influenced and dominated by the sea under the impact of the land-sea wind regime, which has the effect of regulating the climate, creating warmer winters and cooler summers than the mainland. Cat Ba National Park is located in a limestone mountain area with the common forest type being evergreen tropical rainforest. The tropical rainforest on Cat Ba limestone island has an area of ​​about 150 km2, is the largest tropical rainforest on a limestone island in Asia and is typical of the world, the mangrove forest on the island is the largest mangrove forest in the island area of ​​Vietnam, the coral reefs with a rich number of species on an area of ​​1500 hectares are the largest coral reefs in the Gulf of Tonkin. In addition, Cat Ba has a rich cave system with the majestic beauty of nature. With beautiful, pristine sandy beaches and clear water, these are destinations that cannot be missed by all tourists when coming to Cat Ba. This place is known as “Beach Paradise” because there are hundreds of beaches on all the small islands, fine white sand with clear blue water surrounded by cool green mountains. Cat Ba beach is not large but clean and still retains its wild beauty.
