Con Dao National Park (NP) in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province was officially established under Decision No. 135/QD-TTg dated March 31, 1993 of the Prime Minister on the basis of Con Dao Forbidden Forest established by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers under Decision No. 85/CT dated March 1, 1984.

The park was also recognized as a Ramsar Site in 2013.

Con Dao National Park is located in Con Dao district with an area of ​​nearly 20,000 hectares, of which the forest conservation area is nearly 6,000 hectares, the marine conservation area is nearly 14,000 hectares. In addition, the National Park also has a sea buffer zone surrounding the subdivisions of 20,500 hectares. The typical ecosystems of a tropical sea area and are habitats of many endemic flora and fauna of Vietnam, Southeast Asia and the world. According to the Con Dao National Park Management Board, Con Dao National Park has recorded over 1,000 species of vascular plants, 44 species of plants described for the first time on the islands. The park has also recorded 29 species of mammals, 85 species of birds and 46 species of reptiles and amphibians. Although the number of species is not high, the density of individuals is very high, some species and subspecies are endemic to the region such as the Con Son black squirrel. The bird fauna of Con Dao has not been fully studied, but many scientists have confirmed that there are many bird species in Con Dao that cannot be found anywhere else in Vietnam, such as the Nicobar pigeon and tropical birds.

In addition, the marine ecosystem of Con Dao National Park has mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds. Mangroves cover about 31 hectares with 46 plant species distributed around Hon Ba, along the west coast of Hon Bay Canh and along the south and north coasts of Con Son Island. The coral reefs in Con Dao are among the oldest in Vietnam, distributed in shallow waters around the islands, covering a total area of ​​about 1,000 hectares.

Con Dao National Park is an ideal place to visit and study tropical island forest ecosystems and rare endemic flora and fauna. Here, projects have been implemented on marine life conservation such as sea turtle conservation, coral restoration and cultivation, relocation and enclosure of rare seafood species.

Con Dao National Park is also home to critically endangered species and threatened ecological communities (such as Dugongs and sea turtles). The park also plays a supporting role for flora and fauna that are important in maintaining important biodiversity in Vietnam and the world, providing an important food source for aquatic animals, and is a breeding ground, nursery, and migration route for many marine species.
