Attending the conference were Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tri, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment; Dr. Jerome Montemayor, Executive Director of ACB; Representatives from the People’s Committees of provinces such as Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Nghe An, Dong Nai, Hue City, and Ho Chi Minh City attended the 8th ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference, themed “ASEAN Heritage Sites: ASEAN’s Contribution to the Implementation of the Biodiversity Plan,” aiming to link regional efforts with global biodiversity goals. The conference brought together national park managers, conservation area management agencies, technical experts, institutional partners, and key stakeholders to promote inter-sectoral dialogue and enhance regional cooperation.
Xuan Thuy National Park is known as a “station” for many rare and precious bird species, especially a habitat for many waterbirds. It is also one of the six important bird areas in the key wetlands of the Northern Delta and lies on the migratory flight path of waterbirds from Australia to East Asia. More than just a stopover for birds, Xuan Thuy is also a “living museum” of wetland ecosystems. Among them are many species listed in the Vietnam Red Book and the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature), such as the fishing cat, horseshoe crab, spoonbill stork, and grey heron… This diversity has made the area an ideal “natural laboratory” for scientists, students, and conservation organizations both domestically and internationally.
At the conference, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and ACB awarded ASEAN Heritage Park Certificates to five Vietnamese protected areas, including: Xuan Thuy National Park (Ninh Binh), Pu Mat National Park (Nghe An), Bach Ma National Park (Hue City), Con Dao National Park (Ho Chi Minh City), and Dong Nai Nature and Culture Reserve (Dong Nai).
