Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark (recognized in 2010)
UNESCO Global Geopark Dong Van Karst Plateau is located in the northernmost part of Vietnam, more than 320 km from Hanoi, in Ha Giang province and has a long border with China. Dong Van PWD Geopark has a total area of 2356km2 including the administrative boundaries of 4 districts (Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac). Dong Van Geopark is characterized by the northern mountainous region, the terrain is strongly divided with many dangerous high mountains and many deep valleys, with an average altitude of 1000 – 1600m above sea level.
UNESCO Global Geopark Dong Van Karst Plateau has outstanding features with sharp cat-eared rocky mountains, deep and narrow ravines, towering steep cliffs, pyramid-like mountain peaks, and valleys. Deep mountains, caves and rock gardens create incredible beauty, with great value not only for tourism but also for science and education. UNESCO Global Geopark Dong Van Karst Plateau is the residence of 17 ethnic groups. The process of development and long-term attachment of ethnic residents in the rocky plateau has left bold cultural imprints, creating the uniqueness and richness of the culture here. Through the ups and downs, events of history and the development of all aspects of society, ethnic minorities in the Stone Plateau have always preserved their own identity values with many unique and charming features.
