U Minh Thuong National Park is Vietnam’s 5th national park to be recognized as an ASEAN Heritage Park. This is also the area’s first peatland Heritage Garden.

U Minh Thuong National Park belongs to U Minh Thuong district, Kien Giang province, upgraded from U Minh Thuong Nature Reserve to a National Park according to Decision No. 11/QD-TTg dated January 14, 2002 of the Prime Minister. Government.

The national park has a total area of ​​21,107 hectares, of which the core zone accounts for 8,038 hectares and the buffer zone accounts for 13,069 hectares. This is a type of forest with a flooded tropical forest ecosystem that is very rare in the world. The flora and fauna system at U Minh Thuong National Park is very diverse and rich, among the best in the Mekong Delta region with 32 species of mammals, 186 species of birds, 39 species of amphibians and reptiles, 34 species of fish. … Many animal species here such as: Long-nosed otter, Fishing cat, Gray-legged pelican, Javan mantis… are recorded in the Vietnamese and world red books. Regarding plants, besides the native Melaleuca cajuputi tree, there are more than 243 species of higher vascular plants, including many tall and large woody tree species such as: Bui, Mop, Dau, Tram, Gao…

In particular, in the alum forest ecosystem of the Mekong Delta, only the forest flora of the core area of ​​U Minh Thuong National Park has the characteristics of primeval peak forest. These are mixed melaleuca forests and melaleuca forests on peat land, with an area of ​​nearly 3,000 hectares. This was also the base of the Revolution during the resistance period. With this characteristic, U Minh Thuong National Park is not only an area with typical ecosystems of peatland, but it is also considered a historical relic site of Kien Giang province.

To be recognized as a heritage park, a national park must ensure the criteria of nature, wilderness, ecological integrity, diversity and outstanding population value. ASEAN Heritage Parks must implement and be responsible for policies to conserve rare and precious creatures living in Southeast Asia.

U Minh Thuong National Park is highly appreciated for its biodiversity. This is one of Vietnam’s national parks participating in the 3rd peatland restoration and sustainable use project in Southeast Asia (Peatland project). Currently, U Minh Thuong National Park has Achieving 5 criteria out of a total of 9 criteria in the work of preserving and promoting the “green” values ​​of the Ramsar Convention, creating a basis for the authorities to prepare a registration application for U Minh Thuong National Park to be recognized. recognized as a Ramsar site, thereby opening up opportunities for Kien Giang to invest in exploiting the potential and strengths of wetlands to serve the development of ecotourism, while preserving many precious animal and plant species. rare.
