Nam Dong Precious and Rare Gymnosperm Conservation Area, Quan Hoa District was established under Decision No. 87/QD-UBND dated January 8, 2014 of the Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee and assigned to Quan Hoa Forest Protection Department under the Forest Protection Sub-Department for direct management. This place has a typical rocky mountain forest ecosystem of the North Central region, with high biodiversity, especially primary coniferous forest populations with the presence of gymnosperm species, primate species listed in Decree No. 06/2019/ND-CP dated January 22, 2019, Decree No. 64/2019/ND-CP dated July 16, 2019 of the Government; Vietnam Red Book (2007), IUCN World Red Book (2012).

According to the Plan for Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Nam Dong Precious and Rare Gymnosperm Conservation Area, Quan Hoa District, for the period 2021-2030, in Decision No. 3287/QD-UBND dated August 26, 2021 of the Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, the  core area of ​​the Conservation Area is 646.95 hectares  and  the buffer zone area is 3,315.53 hectares  in Nam Dong Commune, Quan Hoa District and Son Lu, Son Dien, Trung Thuong Communes, Quan Son District. With the goal of managing and protecting intact special-use forest resources, conserving and sustainably developing special-use forests associated with the rational use of natural resources, genetic resources, landscapes and environmental services. At the same time, take advantage of investment capital from programs and projects, mobilize the broad participation of the community, domestic and foreign organizations to invest in infrastructure development, support the construction of agricultural and forestry production development models for people in the buffer zone, making an important contribution to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, stabilizing the socio-economy, improving the lives of ethnic minorities in the region, contributing to reducing pressure on forest resources.
