Sao La Species and Habitat Conservation Area, Thua Thien Hue

On October 9, 2013, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province approved Decision No. 2020/QD-UBND on the establishment of the Saola Conservation Area. Accordingly, this Conservation Area has a total area of ​​15,519.93 hectares and spans the territory of 3 communes: Huong Nguyen (A Luoi district), Thuong Quang and Thuong Long (Nam Dong district).

The Sao La Conservation Area is responsible for conserving the Sao La population and two ungulate species, the Large-antlered Muntjac and the Truong Son Muntjac, as well as conserving other endemic and rare species of flora and fauna; protecting the remaining lowland primary natural forest area in the Central Truong Son region with the function of protecting the headwaters of the Huong and Bo rivers; conserving biodiversity, conserving species, gene sources, habitats and landscapes of the forests; raising public awareness, promoting cooperation between local communities, the State and international organizations in forest protection.

Sao La is an animal species identified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and the Vietnam Red Book as a species at very high risk of extinction in the wild. Sao La is considered a typical species for the evolutionary history of Truong Son, living only in the Truong Son mountain range in the area of ​​6 provinces in Vietnam and 4 provinces in Laos.
