Tra Su Melaleuca Forest not only has diverse ecotourism potential but is also a successful model in sustainable use of biodiversity in the Mekong Delta. Tra Su Melaleuca Forest has a total area of 1,050 hectares and is implemented in the forest area of Tra Su Melaleuca Forest Landscape Protection Area in the administrative area of Van Giao Commune, Tinh Bien District, An Giang Province. The forest is located about 10km from the Vietnam – Cambodia border and about 15km from the Mekong River.
This is a flooded forest ecosystem formed by the construction of a special protective dyke system in An Giang province, a type of flooded forest that is directly affected by the annual floodwaters of the Mekong River. Tra Su forest is a cajuput forest planted in 1983 with the purpose of improving the acid sulfate soil in Van Giao commune, Tinh Bien district, An Giang province with an area of over 800 hectares. The forest trees are of many ages, many canopy layers, with a high coverage rate interspersed with flooded bare land (lung dia – in local language) which is a habitat for rare birds and aquatic products.
Tra Su Melaleuca Forest has a natural ecosystem, an important role and scientific significance. It is the cradle, a source of food and a habitat for many animals, especially birds. With grasslands and ponds, it is an ideal habitat and breeding ground for birds, storks and aquatic products, creating a unique landscape typical of the West Hau River region…
Therefore, this place is also a place that provides natural biological resources for other wetlands in the lower Mekong River. Tra Su is considered a place of international importance in wetland conservation in the Mekong Delta. On May 27, 2003, An Giang province issued a decision approving the establishment of Tra Su Melaleuca Forest Landscape Protection Area.
