Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve was recognized on December 2, 2004, with an area of 26,241 hectares (17,041 hectares of island part, 9,200 hectares of sea part), located on the area of Cat Ba National Park, 06 communes and Cat Ba Town; includes most of the 366 large and small limestone islands of the Cat Ba archipelago, in Hai Phong City, Vietnam.
To date, Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve has recorded 4,151 animal and plant species, including: 2,416 terrestrial species, 14 freshwater species, 1,684 marine species, 37 mangrove plant species (of which, 63 mammal species, 214 birds, 82 reptiles and amphibians, Terrestrial molluscs: 150, Freshwater fish: 11, Freshwater crabs: 3, Insects: 274, Higher plants: 1589, Fungi: 44, Marine fish: 196 , Sea turtles: 4, Corals: 193, Benthic animals: 658, Zooplankton: 131, Phytoplankton: 400, Seaweed: 102, Mangrove plants: 37)
Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve are outstanding examples representing the ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of marine and island ecosystems with a high diversity of species. Animal and plant communities on islands and under the sea. On the Cat Ba archipelago, 7 typical subtropical tropical ecosystems have been formed.
Media cultural value: Cat Ba is a region rich in archeology, a ‘cradle’ of Vietnam’s prehistoric marine civilization and culture. Throughout the island, 77 archaeological sites with artifacts and cultural layers have been discovered, confirming that humans have continuously appeared on Cat Ba island over 300,000 years ago when Cat Ba island was still attached to Cat Ba island. with the continent (fossil paleontological relics at Trang Da Cave / Hoa Cuong Cave in Gia Luan commune), through the Late Paleolithic – Early Neolithic period (Ang Ma cave: C14 25,510±220 BC, and the Stone Roof Mr. Bay: C14 16,630±120 BC). Cai Beo culture was formed around 7,000-5,000 years BC, during the period of sea advancement, Cat Ba island separated from the mainland. In Cat Ba today, many unique works are preserved such as the “Ladies” temple, “The Men” temple associated with the legend “Seven days and three storms”; The names of the islands: “The Ba” island and “The Grandfather” island are associated with the legend of our nation’s fight against northern foreign invaders during the early period of building the country. There are also relics of the ancient citadel of the Mac Dynasty in Xuan Dam commune. Festivals that still remain today such as swimming festival, dragon boat racing festival, basket boat racing, water god ceremony, fishing festival… are humanistic tourism resources that are extremely attractive to tourists. The people of Cat Ba region follow the Vietnamese custom of living in villages and communes with the spirit of mutual affection, helping each other in production and daily life, sharing happiness and helping each other in difficulties and tribulations. The architecture of housing and public works follows the Asian style of coastal areas. Cat Ba also has a relatively unique and nutritious seafood cuisine.
