Con Co Island Marine Reserve was established in 2009. The reserve is located at the southern gateway of the Gulf of Tonkin, in Quang Tri, with an area of 4,532 hectares, divided into 3 sub-zones: Strict protection, Ecological restoration and Development.
This reserve is considered one of the most biodiverse areas in Vietnam, with typical ecosystems of tropical seas such as coral reefs, seagrass (mainly distributed in the Southeast and Northwest of the island) and fish species…
Research and statistical results show that the Marine Protected Area has about 224 species of fish out of a total of 960 species of fish distributed in the Gulf of Tonkin, of which 49 species have high economic value. In addition, there are 113 species of hard coral, 56 species of seaweed, 46 species of benthic animals, 20 species of crustaceans, 87 species of coral reef fish, 164 species of phytoplankton, 68 species of zooplankton and rare species such as dolphins and sea turtles.
In particular, Con Co has a number of rare seafood species that are facing the risk of extinction such as jackfruit sea cucumber, red rock urchin, stingray, red peach fish, sea anchovy, white striped grouper, bright striped grouper, tiger cuttlefish, rock lobster, snails… This is also the area where many species are concentrated, of high economic value and endemic to the Central Coast.
Coral reef ecosystems play an important role for marine species, aquatic resources and tourism development. Therefore, protecting coral reefs is necessary for sustainable development. The coral reefs of Con Co Island Marine Reserve are considered to be in good condition, only after Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Hon Mun and Cu Lao Cham.
