On June 26, 2020, the Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 2165/QD-UBND on the establishment of Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve in Quang Binh province (DTTN).

Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (DTTN) is located in the southwest of Quang Binh province (Kim Thuy commune, Le Thuy district), bordering the Vietnam – Laos border and Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve, Quang Tri province. This is one of the areas with the largest natural forest area in Vietnam and currently only exists in some areas along the Vietnam – Laos border.

Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong National Park has rich forest resources, stretching from Minh Hoa district through Bo Trach, Quang Ninh and Le Thuy districts to Huong Hoa district (Quang Tri).

In the conservation area, there is a large area of ​​evergreen tropical forest with primary characteristics on lowland mountains; this type of forest has become very rare in Vietnam due to strong impacts and has been narrowed in other areas. This is one of the areas with high biodiversity value of the Truong Son range, highly appreciated by many international organizations on nature conservation, including the entire area of ​​21 sub-zones. The total area of ​​the DTTN is 22,132.93 ha with functional sub-zones including: Strictly protected sub-zone, ecological restoration sub-zone and administrative – service sub-zone.

This is a rare place in the country that preserves over 50% of the vegetation (area of ​​14,574 ha) of the lowland tropical evergreen closed forest and subtropical evergreen closed forest. This is a rich forest with abundant resources, while this type of forest no longer exists in other localities.

In the area, there are many endangered and rare species of animals and plants that need to be preserved. Especially rare animals such as: Gaur, Sao La, Large-antlered Mang, Truong Son Mang, Javan Pangolin, Siki White-cheeked Crested Gibbon, Brown-shanked Douc, Crested Pheasant, Hornbill… Rare wood species such as: Honey Mahogany, Lau Mahogany, Green Lim, Huong Vu, Huong Re, Da Huong, etc… Chau Cave – Khe Nuoc Trong is recognized by the World Bird Conservation Organization as one of 62 important bird areas and in the Lowland Endemic Bird Area of ​​Vietnam. At the same time, it is evaluated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as one of 200 centers of high biodiversity globally.

It is known that the Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong forest area has a very rich flora and fauna, with many rare species listed in the Vietnam and World Red Book. Of these, there are 15 species of reptiles and amphibians endemic to Vietnam; 12 species endemic to Indochina and 17 threatened species including 9 species listed in the Vietnam Red Book, 10 species listed in the Red List, 6 species listed in Decree 06 of the Government and 7 species listed in CITES appendices, with a large lowland habitat identified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a key biodiversity area, connecting Vietnam and Laos.

According to preliminary surveys and statistics by scientists, in the Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong forest area, there are 357 species of terrestrial vertebrates. Of which, there are 76 species of mammals; 214 species of birds and 67 species of reptiles, frogs, etc.

This place is also the habitat of some bird species with narrow distribution areas belonging to the important bird area of ​​the Truong Son range and is located in the Central lowland endemic bird area, due to the distribution of globally threatened bird species such as crested pheasant, long-billed laughingthrush, grey-cheeked warbler and grey-cheeked laughingthrush, pheasant species, and fowl.

This is also a key biodiversity area, belonging to the system of globally important conservation areas due to the distribution of the Saola species and many other rare animals (such as: Red-faced monkey, Pig-tailed monkey, Little Loris…). Experts from the Vietnam Nature Conservation Center under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations discovered 61 groups of Siki white-cheeked gibbons and 9 groups of brown-shanked douc langurs in Dong Chau forest.

Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong area (especially Khe Nuoc Trong area) is located at the 17th parallel, associated with the legendary Truong Son road in the resistance war against the US to save the country of our people. Places such as Bai Dan, Trung Doan village have historical value and great potential for tourism to visit the old battlefield, to find the origin. Living near this area are the Bru – Van Kieu people with very unique customs and practices, different from the culture of other ethnic groups, so there is potential for community cultural tourism.

Khe Nuoc Trong area has beautiful landscape, vast natural forests, overlapping with Truong Son road and winding streams creating majestic natural landscape, suitable for developing eco-tourism and organizing entertainment tourism services. The ammunition dump is located on Ho Chi Minh road near the mountain peak dividing the border of Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces, with an altitude of over 1,000m, so the cool climate is a favorable condition for eco-tourism business.
