Ly Son Marine Reserve is divided into 3 functional areas including: Strict protection area to protect the ecosystem of the tidal zone, seagrass and coral reefs at a depth of 3 to 20m; Ecological restoration area in the area of ​​Big Island and Small Island on an area of ​​nearly 2,000ha to protect marine species; Development area on an area of ​​4,500ha including the harbor and surrounding sea.
Ly Son sea area is considered one of the sea areas with high biodiversity, with typical ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass beds and many rare seafood. According to the assessment, Ly Son sea area has 157 species of coral, 202 species of marine fish, 137 species of seaweed, 96 species of crustaceans, 40 species of echinoderms, 6 species of seagrass. In addition, this area also has 25 species in the list of rare aquatic species at risk of extinction in Vietnam that need to be protected, restored and developed.
