Phong Dien Nature Reserve is located between 16 o 17′ to 16 o 35′ North latitude and 107 o 03′ to 107 o 20′ East longitude, in the Northwest of Thua Thien Hue province. This area includes A Luoi and Phong Dien districts and Hong Ha, Hong Kim, Phong My and Phong Xuan communes. Phong Dien Nature Reserve was established by Decision No. 2979/QD-UB dated November 13, 2002 of the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province with an area of 41,433 hectares including 43 sub-areas, with the goal of conserving natural resources and biodiversity, …, populations of rare flora and fauna species, endangered species, endemic species of the Central lowlands.

a) Flora: Phong Dien Nature Reserve is characterized by tropical evergreen closed forests distributed at altitudes below 700m and subtropical evergreen closed forests distributed at altitudes above 700m. Through incomplete statistics, Phong Dien Nature Reserve has recorded 597 species of vascular plants belonging to 366 genera and 118 families, of which the Fern phylum has 14 families, 34 species; the Pinophyta phylum has 02 families, 04 species; the Pinophyta phylum has 02 families, 05 species; the Magnolia phylum has 100 families and 554 species. According to the results of the survey of some rare plant species in Phong Dien Nature Reserve by Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry in 2013, conducted in the area of 02 districts Phong Dien and A Luoi, initially counted 36 species listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2007, 17 species listed in Decree No. 32/2006/ND-CP, 14 in the World Red List (IUCN, 2011) and 5 species in the CITES Appendix, including 45 genera and 34 families belonging to 3 branches of vascular plants.

b) Fauna: According to the results of the investigation and preliminary assessment of the current status of mammal species, along with the inheritance of previous research results of a number of authors, combined with the analysis of collected photos and specimens, it has been determined that Phong Dien Nature Reserve has 54 mammal species, accounting for 18.3% (54/295) of the total number of species here.

– Diversity in ungulate species: Ungulates account for 14.8% (8/54) of the current mammal species in Phong Dien Nature Reserve; Primates in the Nature Reserve account for 32% of the primate species in Vietnam (8/25) and 53.3% (8/15) of the current primate species in the Central Truong Son region, belonging to 3 families, of which the Loris family has 02 species, the Monkey family has 04 species and the Gibbon family has 02 species. This can confirm that Phong Dien Nature Reserve is one of the locations with high diversity of primates. The research results also added 09 species to the list that have never been listed in the lists of mammal classes published in Phong Dien Nature Reserve before, including: Pygmy Loris ( Nyeticebiis pygmaeus ) and White-cheeked Crested Gibbon ( Hylobates leucogenus siki ); Gaur ( Bos gaurus ), Asian palm civet (Prionodon par dicolor), civet ( Viverricula indicia ), mongoose ( Chrotogate owstoni ); mouse ( Mus musculus ), wood rat ( Rattus koratensis ) and mountain rat ( Rattus sabanus ).

– Diversity of bird species: According to the results of the 2011 survey, 176 bird species were recorded, including 12 endemic species and 22 rare bird species, accounting for 12.5% of the total number of bird species in Phong Dien Nature Reserve and 51.16% of the total number of rare birds nationwide. This confirms that Phong Dien Nature Reserve is one of the locations with high diversity in species composition and bird density, not only representing the Central region, but also the whole of Vietnam.

– Diversity in amphibian and reptile composition: According to the 2010 research results, 46 amphibian and reptile species were recorded and 400 live specimens were collected. There are some unidentified species (possibly new species) awaiting species identification results from the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Tropical Biology.

– Diversity of fish species composition: According to the research results in 2013, 67 fish species belonging to 45 genera in 18 families of 06 different fish orders were identified. Of which, the upstream area of O Lau River has 62 species, 44 genera belonging to 18 families and 06 orders, followed by the upstream area of Bo River with 52 species, 36 genera belonging to 16 families and 06 orders. The upstream area of My Chanh River has the lowest species composition with 46 species, 36 genera belonging to 16 families and 06 orders.
