On June 23, 2013, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An province coordinated with the People’s Committee of Que Phong district to announce Decision No. 340/QD-UBND on converting the Que Phong district Protective Forest Management Board into Pu Hoat Nature Reserve. The unit is responsible for managing 85,761.43 hectares of forest and forestry land (special-use forest area 34,589.89 hectares, protective forest 51,171.54 hectares) in 9 communes (Tri Le, Tien Phong, Thong Thu, Hanh Dich, Nam Giai, Dong Van, Nam Nhoong, Cam Muon and Chau Thon). According to the assessment, Pu Hoat forest has high biodiversity with 800 plant species, of which more than 30 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book, including many valuable trees such as trai, sen mat, tau mat, cho chi, to hap, po mu…; Notably, the sa mu population has an average diameter of over 1.5-2m, height of over 45m, especially there are trees with a diameter of up to 2.8m, height of over 50m. Forest animals in Pu Hoat are equally diverse with hundreds of vertebrate species belonging to 4 classes: Rare animals include elephants, tigers, leopards, clouded leopards…

Regarding birds, there are golden pheasants, white pheasants, peacocks, hornbills, and white-bellied grebes. Regarding reptiles, there are bordered mountain tortoises, golden box turtles, big-headed turtles, land turtles, cobras, reticulated pythons, ground pythons, etc.
