Thanks to fully meeting the criteria for wetlands that play an important role in preserving rare species of animals and plants, recently, U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang province was officially recognized as a Ramsar site ( Wetlands area of ​​international importance in terms of biology and conservation) ranks 8th in Vietnam and 2,228th in the world.

U Minh Thuong National Park is one of the three most important wetland areas in the Mekong Delta; has the characteristics of primeval peak forest. These are the advantages of mixed forests and melaleuca forests on peat land, becoming an ecosystem of special importance; It is a nurturing and sheltering place for many wild, rare, unique and endangered animals. The National Park can be most characteristically described as a Melaleuca forest ecosystem in a peat swamp area. This place also has nearly 3,000 hectares of swamp land and flooded grasslands – the largest and most important area of ​​forests in the U Minh region. That is reflected in the differences in flora and fauna found here. U Minh Thuong National Park has 254 species of higher vascular plants and vertebrate – invertebrate resources with the presence of 33 mammal species, 188 bird species, 29 amphibian reptile species, 60 fish species, 204 insect species and many aquatic animal species are distributed at different depths in the ecosystem. Among them, 72 species are identified as rare (recorded in the Vietnam Red Book and IUCN).
